PEFC – Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification – was founded in 1999 to enable small forest owners and family-run forestry businesses to develop and demonstrate sustainable forest management. Today, PEFC is present in more than 70 countries and continues to grow.
PEFC works for a world where people manage forests sustainably. As the largest forest certification system, PEFC sets the standard for how we ensure a better future for animals, plants, and the people who depend on forest resources.

The world’s largest forest certification system
More than 324 million hectares worldwide are certified according to PEFC’s standards, and over 20,000 companies and organizations are certified under PEFC’s Chain of Custody system. This means that 75% of the world’s certified forests are certified according to PEFC standards, making PEFC the world’s largest forest certification system for sustainable forest management.
In short, PEFC is:
-
Proof of responsible forest management
-
Verified by independent third-party audits
-
A globally recognized eco-label
-
Accepted in both private and public procurement policies
-
Making certification possible for small forest owners
-
Helping to secure the future
-
Supporting those who depend on the forest
Control and issuance of certificates are carried out by approved certification bodies, independent of both forest owners, producers, timber buyers, and PEFC.
The PEFC label may only be used if forest operations meet a series of responsible requirements. The entire journey of the timber – from the forest, through the production chain, to the store – is verified to ensure the credibility of the label. The PEFC system guarantees traceability back to the forest, and every link in the value chain must be PEFC-certified for the timber to be sold with the PEFC label.
PEFC is an approved and recognized eco-label, accepted in public and private procurement policies worldwide. It provides consumers with confidence that products come from responsibly managed forests. With growing demands from the construction and industrial sectors, PEFC is your guarantee of legal and responsible timber.
PEFC protects biodiversity, ecosystems, and the climate by:
-
Forest area and timber resources – e.g., by using tree species adapted to the local climate.
-
Forest health – e.g., by promoting mixed stands and natural regeneration.
-
Forest production – e.g., by selecting tree species with stable yields and ensuring variation in species.
-
Forest wildlife and plant life – e.g., by protecting rare species and leaving deadwood for insects.
-
Forest protection of soil and water – e.g., by limiting soil disturbance and pesticide use.
-
Forest cultural and social values – e.g., by safeguarding heritage sites and ensuring stable working conditions.
Responsible forest management, in short, means that forest operations must be environmentally sound, socially beneficial, and economically viable – both for present and future generations.
Forest management is responsible when it:
-
Maintains and increases forest resources
-
Maintains and improves forest health and vitality
-
Maintains and improves forest productivity
-
Maintains and enhances forest biodiversity
-
Maintains and improves the protective functions of forests
-
Preserves the socio-economic functions of forests
These requirements are built into PEFC standards and are ensured in PEFC-certified forests.

In the context of climate discussions, the term “substitution effect of wood” is often used. This refers to the fact that wood, when used instead of other materials, can reduce CO2 emissions, as wood requires less energy to produce and use – and therefore results in lower CO2 output.
