PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) is an international, non-profit membership organisation that promotes responsible forest management through independent certification. PEFC consists of a global alliance of national forest certification systems, all governed by members representing the forestry sector, businesses and civil society.
PEFC works to ensure that forests are responsibly managed in practice and that timber and wood-based products can be traced throughout the entire supply chain, from the forest to the finished product. At the same time, PEFC serves as a forum for cooperation on standards, governance and shared principles across countries.
The world’s largest forest certification system
Almost 300 million hectares of forest worldwide are certified according to PEFC standards, and more than 29,800 companies and organisations are certified under the PEFC Chain of Custody system.
This means that almost three quarters (71%) of all certified forests worldwide are certified according to PEFC standards (an estimate based on the latest PEFC and FSC figures). This makes PEFC the world´s largest forest certification system for responsible forest management.
PEFC certification demonstrates that a forest is managed in accordance with environmental, social and economic requirements. All three are essential elements in ensuring responsible forest management. PEFC certification gives forest owners the opportunity to demonstrate that their forest management practices follow responsible guidelines designed to safeguard the long-term survival and health of forests, both now and for future generations.
Control and issuance of certificates are carried out by approved certification bodies, independent of both forest owners, producers, timber buyers, and PEFC.
The PEFC label may only be used if forest operations meet a series of responsible requirements. The entire journey of the timber – from the forest, through the production chain, to the store – is verified to ensure the credibility of the label. The PEFC system provides traceability back to the forest, and every link in the value chain must be PEFC-certified for the timber to be sold with the PEFC label.
PEFC is a globally recognized forest certification scheme, accepted in public and private procurement policies worldwide. It provides consumers with confidence that products come from responsibly managed forests.
PEFC certification provides documented assurance of compliance with PEFC requirements for responsible forest management and traceability.
PEFC certification includes requirements relating to biodiversity, ecosystems and climate-related forest management::
Forest area and timber resources – e.g., by using tree species adapted to the local climate.
Forest health – e.g., by promoting mixed stands and natural regeneration.
Forest production – e.g., by selecting tree species with stable yields and ensuring variation in species.
Forest wildlife and plant life – e.g., by protecting rare species and leaving deadwood for insects.
Forest protection of soil and water – e.g., by limiting soil disturbance and pesticide use.
Forest cultural and social values – e.g., by safeguarding heritage sites and ensuring stable working conditions.
Responsible forest management, in short, means that forest operations must be environmentally sound, socially beneficial, and economically viable – both for present and future generations.
Forest management is responsible when it:
Maintains and increases forest resources
Maintains and improves forest health and vitality
Maintains and improves forest productivity
Maintains and enhances forest biodiversity
Maintains and improves the protective functions of forests
Preserves the socio-economic functions of forests
These requirements are built into PEFC standards and are ensured in PEFC-certified forests.
